Washing Your Cloth Diapers and Inserts

Washing and drying your new cloth diapers will not only help extend the lifespan of the products but also ensure a proper fit and less leaks.

Our cloth diapers are made up of a PUL water resistant outer lining and a stay dry suede cloth inner lining. The legs and back pocket for inserts are held in place by  stretchy elastic. All of these materials need to be cared for properly in order for them to function as expected. Incorrect care of these materials will reduce their intended effectiveness. We work with highly sought after manufacturers to create a durable and professional product, however proper care is still necessary.

For our diapers:

Moisture can degrade the PUL linning so washing and drying your diapers every 1-3 days is recommended.

Rinse: For newborns rinsing is optional depending on the soil level. The easiest method is to simply run your diaper and inserts through a quick cycle on your washing machine with cool water. This will wash any any urine or stools to prep for the full wash.

For older babies who have started solids you will need to remove any stools prior to washing. This can be done with a sprayer or a dunk and swish method. Disposable or reusable liners can help with clean up! For extra dirty diapers a quick wash cycle can also be done if needed.

Wash: Wash on your machines longest cycle with cool water. Avoid hot water when possible and do not use extra hot or sanitary mode. This will degrade the PUL and can damage the leg and pocket elastics. Laundry agitators can be helpful if you have a front load washing machine. Never use fabric softeners as they will coat your diaper and affect absorbency. Check out Fluff Love University for specifics on recommended detergent and machine specific wash cycles.

Dry: Hang dry for best results, or dry on low heat to avoid de-laminating the outer PUL lining. Never dry on high heat!

For Inserts

The same wash routine used for cloth diapers may be used on all of our inserts. Our cotton and bamboo blend as well as our organic cotton hemp boosters will experience some shrinkage when washed.

To avoid baconing and excessive shrinkage please wash with cold water and dry on low. Hang drying works as well, however due to the thickness of these inserts it may take longer. Stretching the inserts back to their original shape after washing can also help them lay flat. Bamboo inserts will not shrink however to keep the terry material from fraying low heat is also recommended.
